Any form of increasing airtightness in the home, for example, by installing insulation increases the chance of natural ventilation not happening at the correct levels to properly ‘air’ the room in question. This can lead to the unwanted build-up of moisture, bad air and unwanted contaminants.

This is such a serious issue that various quality standards like PAS2030: 2019 (the current standard which applies to retrofit of insulation) and Building Regulations Approved Document Part F (the document which controls the issue of ventilation within the building envelope) state that ventilation must achieve 2,500mm2 in every room with a property which has received any form of air-tightness measure.

Not doing so is a breach of the standards and increases the risk of fungal build up which is not only un-healthy but which can also start to erode the interior décor as a consequence.

This form of ventilation, whilst acceptable, increases the ‘draught’ effect which you’d expect from putting holes in the window. It also increases the noise effect. The Airbox ventilation vent achieves the ventilation effect whilst having the ability to work with the window to decrease draughtiness and noise.

Some windows have a secure ability to leave the windows partially open which achieves the desired effect of creating a decent level of ventilation. In warmer months this is useful. However, many windows don’t have this functionality which is where the Airbox comes into its own. The window can provide a steady stream of airflow without compromising on safety or security.

EU regulations recommend airing the room up to 4 times a day for 15-30 minutes, which is often impossible or extremely inconvenient. In rooms with gas stoves, the absence of oxygen is especially dangerous, since this increases the likelihood of build up of dangerous gases. Whether you choose Airbox or not, if the property is becoming more air-tight we strongly recommend ventilation of one form or another is installed.

With the heating on, no it shouldn’t get any colder. The unit has the ability to adjust the air supply so if it is very cold and you wish to decrease any perceived draught, simple close the in-built valve and any cold air entering the room will decrease.

Most air conditioners won’t provide you with fresh air. Their work is based on the fact that air is re-circulated through a filter and cooled or heated as part of that process. This won’t provide the necessary fresh air to make a room healthy. Simply contrast how you feel after a day in an air conditioned building compared with time spent outside in fresh air.

During normal operation the valve shouldn’t freeze because of the air being moved often from a warmer inside room to the outside. However, when it’s very cold we don’t recommend you leave the Airbox closed for long periods of time which will disrupt the air movement which ensures ice cannot build up.

There are cheaper trickle vents on the market. However all require drilling or routing which takes considerable time compared with literally minutes to install the Airbox. Couple that with the potential damage to windows from drilling etc and we believe that it’s safer than the cost of replacing expensive windows. We’ve also found that customers prefer the Airbox because it doesn’t do any damage to the windows.
