Trickle Vent Installation Guide and Advice
Published on: October 30, 2025

Trickle vents may seem very simple, just a small piece of plastic or UPVC installed into your windows, either as standard or via one of our Air Box solutions.
However, they’re a lot more complicated than they seem, helping to improve ventilation within your commercial building or home without creating draughts or adding to your energy bills.
But despite this, installing trickle vents is a quick and easy process, more than worth it to prevent all the issues poor ventilation can cause. Or at least it should be quick and easy. Some providers make their trickle vents needlessly complicated, so you have to spend a fortune on installation. Not the case with Air Box.
Today we’re going to explain the installation process, how you can do it yourself, and why our solution is the best for your home or business.
But first, some basics.
What are Trickle Vents?
Trickle vents are small rectangles installed into the top of a window or window frame. Their design allows them to be opened, so a small ‘trickle’ of air can enter the room, mixing with the stale air and making it smell a lot fresher.
Most UPVC windows have trickle vents built in to the window frame, so they don’t need to be installed later. This is necessary as UPVC windows offer poor natural ventilation, which is why the issues we’ll discuss shortly aren’t limited to older buildings.
These built-in vents do work well, but sometimes you may wish to increase the level of ventilation using our Airbox dependant on the size of the built in vents. If there aren’t any pre-built-in vents, then Airbox is simply a no brainer thanks to the ease of install and aesthetics. Our solution, thanks to its positioning, pushes the air upwards, so you won’t notice large draughts, but fresh air can travel further, improving the ventilation even in larger spaces like commercial buildings.
Why are Trickle Vents Needed?
When air is unable to circulate, it becomes stale. Air conditioning and fans may make the air feel fresher, but they only serve to move that stale air around. The only way to sweeten this air is by diluting it with new air from outside.
If you don’t do this, a number of issues can surface. As well as the air not smelling fresh, you might also experience:
- Damp
 - Mould
 - Excess Dust and other pollutants
 - High humidity

All of these issues can be detrimental to our health. If they room is being used by someone with allergies, or who is susceptible to breathing issues, poor ventilation is very dangerous. At best, the stale air will be unpleasant and bad smells will linger, at worst it could put someone in the hospital, especially if there is rampant mould.
As you can imagine, the easiest way to improve ventilation is by opening a window. This allows a lot of air in at once, and stale air will quickly disperse. However, as soon as the window is closed, the air will stagnate again. This is especially important in a commercial building, which will only have open windows for a set amount of time, and won’t be ventilated in the evenings or at the weekend, depending on what business or group uses it. Schools often have issues with poor ventilation during the weekends and school holidays, which can lead to a lot of problems when they open up again.
These issues are most common in winter, as we keep our windows closed more often to keep heat in, and cold air out. This is when trickle vents are at their best, allowing air into rooms without the need for an open window. But if they aren’t working as well as they should, issues will appear quickly, and the cause may not be immediately clear.
That’s where we come in.
